10 steps to quality captions

Whether you're editing automated captions or creating your own from scratch, prioritise these 10 elements. They'll help you give caption users a more comfortable and equitable experience.

 1. Check for accuracy

Have you corrected all errors (and not just the typos)?

 2. Check your timings

Do your captions smoothly match up with the sound?

 3. Check your sizing

Are your captions easy to read?

 4. Check your colours

Are your captions clearly visible against the video content?

 5. Check your positioning

Are your captions obscuring - or obscured by, other information?

 6. Check your breaks

Are your captions and lines split cleanly?

 7. Check your labelling

How have you labelled sounds, music or speaker changes?

 8. Keep it simple

Prioritise readability and clarity over creativity.

 9. Keep it consistent

Avoid changing position, colour, size or labels unnecessarily.

 10. Review... and review again

Watch your video with captions and no sound. How does it feel?
